DFAS TAX INFORMATION 

Enter your DFAS Form 1099-R in the federal tax interview (Retirement Plans and Social Security section of Wages and Income)The Iowa state tax interview will identify your military retirement income automatically from the DFAS Form 1099-R entry. Complete the state tax interview. There may be additional questions regarding the military retirement pay, but the program will automatically exempt it from your Iowa taxable income.

Retirement pay for military service in the United States  Armed Forces, the Armed Forces Military Reserve, or the National Guard is eligible for exemption from Iowa income tax and is not included on line 9,without regard for age or disability.   The Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard make up the Armed Forces.  Only military retirement pay received from the Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS), or a similar source, is eligible for the exemption.

Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS) is a computerized database for United States Service members, retirees, 100% VA Disabled Veterans, dependents, DoD active Contractors, and others worldwide who are entitled to Public Key Infrastructure and TRICARE eligibility.

NOTE: Everyone needs to call to ensure the ID/DEERS office is open, and ID machines are working. 

The Uniformed Services have agreed to assist each other in verifying ID card eligibility. The Uniformed Services assist each other in verifying certain categories of eligible persons. With on-line connection to the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting system (DEERS) using the Real Time Automated Personnel Identification System (RAPIDS), issuing activities shall:

Verify eligibility. (See Eligibility below)

Enrolling into DEERS.

Issue ID cards upon presentation of proper documentation. Acceptable proof of identity documentation (adults only) any time an Identification Card is requested.

Eligibility

Active duty members, retired members, and members of the Reserve components not on active duty in excess of 30 days.

Retired Reserve members who have reached their 60th birthday.

Family members of military sponsors on active duty for more than 30 consecutive days.

Family members of retirees (with pay)

Family members of Ready Reserve (Selected, Individual and Standby Reservists).

Family members of Retired Reservists, who have qualified for retired pay at age 60, yet have not reached age 60.

Unremarried or unmarried former spouses previously enrolled in DEERS.

Medal of Honor recipients and their eligible family members.

One hundred percent disabled veterans and their family members.

Former members having reached age 60 and in receipt of retired pay for non-regular service, and their family members.

Eligible survivors of

Active duty members.

Retired with pay members.

Reserve members on active or inactive duty.

Retirement - eligible reservists who died prior to transfer to the Retired Reserve (Reservists who were still participating).

Retired reserve members who qualify for pay at age 60 but die before reaching age 60.

One hundred percent DAVs.

Medal of Honor Recipients.

The military sponsor (Soldier) can add the following dependents to DEERS

Properly certified final decree of divorce, dissolution, or annulment of marriage.

Court order for adoption or guardianship.

Retirement orders or DD Form 214 showing retirement.

DD Form 1300, Report of Casualty

Certification from VA of 100-percent disabled status.

Orders awarding Medal of Honor.

Formal determination of eligibility for Medicare Part A and B from the Social Security Administration

Civilian personnel records.

Two UNEXPIRED and ORIGINAL (no copies) forms of identity must be presented EVERYTIME an ID is issued or renewed.
